Is it Time For the NFL to End Blackouts?

That's what Tim Keown writing for ESPN.com thinks. With the proliferation of Sunday Ticket, fantasy football, live internet/Twitter updates, and other televised games available, are NFL teams only hurting themselves by blacking out non-sellouts in their home markets? After all, how is a kid growing up in Hayward, CA (using Keown's example) going to become a Raiders fan when he can't even see half of their games? Wouldn't he get to watch his favorite team just as often if he became a Cowboys or Patriots fan? Something for the NFL to think about.

DISH Network to Offer NFL RedZone Channel

DISH Network Corporation (Nasdaq: DISH) and NFL Network today announced that "NFL RedZone" - a new channel from NFL Network - will be available on DISH Network starting on the NFL's first Sunday of the regular season, Sept. 13.

NFL RedZone, produced by NFL Network, whips around every NFL game on Sunday afternoons delivering touchdowns and the most exciting moments live and in high definition. When a team goes inside the 20-yard line, known as the "red zone," fans see the crucial plays as they happen. The channel keeps fans up-to-date in real time, switching from game to game with live look-ins, highlights and a chance to see every important play.

NBCSports.com and NFL.com to Stream Sunday Night Football Again

NBCSports.com and NFL.com will be streaming live coverage of NBC's 17-game Sunday Night Football schedule for the second straight year. The feature, known as Sunday Night Football Extra, will again have a live stream of NBC's Sunday Night Football broadcast, plus four additional camera feeds providing different views of the game. Additional interactive features available this year will include DVR functionality, live in-game analysis, fantasy stats and chat. And best of all, it will still be free! 2009: The Blackout Season in Jacksonville?

According to Vito Stellino of the Florida Times-Union, the Jacksonville Jaguars have already given up on selling out any of their 10 home games within the 72-hour window necessary to lift local TV blackouts.

The Jaguars play the first of 10 home games this year Saturday night — two in the preseason and eight in the regular season — and the team has already announced all 10 will be blacked out on TV because of a lack of ticket sales.

This will be the first time in their 15-year history that they’ve blacked out all 10 games and the stadium might be only, about half-filled Saturday night.

Now I have not been able to find any quote or press release that is directly attributable to the Jaguars organization stating this, but if it is true, one has to think that this could be the beginning of the franchise laying the groundwork to eventually leave town. It was a very curious decision the NFL made 16 years ago when they granted Jacksonville a franchise over Baltimore and St. Louis, two larger markets that eventually got relocated teams and have been doing just fine at the ticket gates. If any of the powers-that-be in Los Angeles who want football back there are paying attention, now would be the time to step up your game.

NFL & NBC extend deal

The NFL and NBC have extended their Sunday Night Football broadcast deal through the 2013 season, according to Broadcast & Cable. The original deal was to expire after the 2011 season. That means that all of the NFL's TV deals are now set to expire at the same time and could make for interesting negotiations/bidding for 2014 and beyond.

Early Start for NFL's RedZone Channel

This from the Sports Business Journal:

The NFL will launch its own RedZone Channel this season, per its agreements with Comcast Cable and networks CBS and Fox back in May. However as of now it will only be available on Comcast, as the NFL once again finds itself in carriage negotiations with other cable providers. The show will not be a simulcast of DirecTV's RedZone Channel, but rather a different version of the same concept that will be produced by the NFL Network in its studios.

As an addition to my post about DirecTV adding ESPNU to its basic package, Comcast has followed suit and done the same on its cable systems. Also, even more great news for Comcast internet subscribers (including yours truly). On August 4 Comcast subscribers gained access to ESPN360. This will be a great way for many of you to watch ESPN produced content (especially college football) via the internet.

Both of these are just in time for college football season!!!

After a summer hiatus for both this blog and the NFL, it's time to get fired up for football season! It begins tonight with the Hall of Fame Game featuring the Buffalo Bills and Tennessee Titans at 8:15pm ET on NBC. This also marks the first game broadcast in the post-Madden era. Cris Collinsworth will make his Sunday Night Football booth debut, providing commentary with Al Michaels doing play-by-play and Andrea Kremer on the sidelines.

In the next couple days I will be providing team-by-team information on preseason broadcasts. And specifically, information on when NFL Network will replay the games....so those of you outside your team's market can set your DVRs!
