If I'm going to start a blog about sports and television, it might as well be the week leading up to the Summer Olympics and a month before football season. So here goes.
I'm really not a fan of the Olympics.....at least not anymore. For me, the Olympics lost their appeal at the end of the Cold War. It was much more compelling to tune in back then, when the hope of seeing good triumph over evil truly made for must see TV. And until Al Qaeda or Hamas decide to assemble Olympic teams, the hatred and loathing of The Enemy that stirred up my patriotism and made me set aside the rest of my life for the Olympics just won't be the same.
But now there's finally be another villain in our midst. The Chinese have made it clear that they intend to dominate the medal count in the first Games held on their soil, and they may well do it. And with their history of human rights abuse, censorship, and exploding demand for energy that is contributing to the shakedown I get everytime I visit the gas pump, I say "Screw the Chinese! U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A!"
OK, so now I finally have a reason to watch something (anything) on NBC, does anyone know what channel they are on DirecTV in Portland, OR? Where's my remote? Is NBC still blocked from my guide?
And let the games begin!
